About Course

Become an American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor and empower others to save lives. This course is designed for healthcare professionals who want to teach high-quality CPR and AED use to others. Participants will gain the skills, knowledge, and confidence to effectively instruct and evaluate students in BLS Provider courses according to the latest AHA guidelines.

The course includes:

  • Instructor Essentials Training: Covers AHA policies, administrative procedures, and effective teaching techniques.

  • Hands-On Learning: Practice leading BLS scenarios and skills sessions using real equipment and manikins.

  • Evaluation and Monitoring: Each candidate is required to successfully demonstrate teaching competence during an actual class under the supervision of an AHA Training Center Faculty member.

Prerequisites:

  • Current AHA BLS Provider certification

  • Alignment with an authorized AHA Training Center

  • Completion of the AHA BLS Instructor Essentials online course (prior to attending the in-person session)

Upon successful completion, participants will receive an AHA BLS Instructor card, valid for two years, allowing them to teach BLS Provider and Heartsaver-level courses.

What Will You Learn?

  • During the AHA BLS Instructor Course, participants will learn how to effectively teach, evaluate, and manage BLS training sessions for healthcare providers and community members. By the end of the course, students will be able to confidently conduct both the BLS Provider and Heartsaver CPR/AED courses following AHA standards.
  • Key learning objectives include:
  • Instructor Role & Responsibilities:
  • Understand AHA instructor requirements, the structure of the BLS program, and how to maintain instructor certification.
  • Course Administration:
  • Learn how to set up, organize, and manage classes through the AHA Training Center system, including rosters, paperwork, and certification card issuance.
  • Teaching Methodology:
  • Develop effective instructional techniques, including adult learning principles, facilitation strategies, and feedback delivery during hands-on practice.
  • Skills Evaluation:
  • Learn how to accurately evaluate CPR, AED use, and team dynamics performance in accordance with AHA performance standards.
  • Testing and Remediation:
  • Gain the ability to conduct written exams, practical skills testing, and provide constructive remediation when needed.
  • Classroom Management:
  • Learn to lead engaging, efficient, and professional courses for a variety of student audiences.
  • AHA Policies and Quality Assurance:
  • Understand AHA program policies, recordkeeping requirements, and how to ensure quality and consistency across courses.
